Abodu Junior ADU Conversion: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you own an Abodu unit in Los Angeles and the junior ADU conversion components are failing, we stock the replacement parts and install them for a typical range of $1,850 to $4,600 depending on what’s actually worn out. Most Abodu juniors we service in Los Angeles need either a new all-in-one kitchenette module, a bathroom cassette replacement, or the electrical subpanel retorque that comes with the conversion kit. The call usually starts with “the mini-split keeps tripping” or “water’s pooling under the unit.”
Here’s the reality: Abodu builds a tight product, but the junior conversion pieces are the parts that take the most abuse. Los Angeles summers push the electrical connections hard, and the compact water heater in the bath cassette works double duty in a small space. When those fail, you want someone who knows the platform, not someone learning on your wall.
We’re an independent Los Angeles service provider, not affiliated with Abodu. That matters because we carry OEM-spec parts and aftermarket equivalents, and we’ll tell you which one makes sense for your year and model.
Which Abodu Models This Applies To

Abodu’s junior ADU line runs through three generations: the Series 1 (2018-2020), Series 2 (2020-2023), and the current Series 3. The conversion kit differs across all three, and that’s where owners get tripped up. A Series 1 bathroom cassette will not seat into a Series 2 chassis without modifying the drain rough-in, and no amount of persuasion changes that. Reed Calloway has seen the damage from someone trying.
How to identify your unit: the data plate is inside the exterior electrical panel box, not on the frame. It lists the series number, build date, and the VIN-like serial. If that plate is gone or faded, measure the depth of the interior wall at the kitchenette bump-out. Series 1 measures 24 inches. Series 2 and 3 measure 19 inches. That measurement tells us exactly which conversion parts we’re pulling off the truck.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Abodu specifically: the original conversion modules are well built, but the supply chain has been inconsistent since 2022. For bathroom cassettes and mini-split condenser brackets, we stock a direct-fit aftermarket option from a southern California fabricator that carries a longer service life in our coastal salt air and valley heat. For the electrical subpanel and breakers, we stay OEM. No exceptions.
Signs Your Abodu Junior ADU Conversion Is Failing
- Moisture lines or soft spots under the bathroom cassette. The cassette pan is galvanized, and after four to six years of hard water in Los Angeles, the drain grommet shrinks and weeps. What starts as a bead of water becomes drywall damage within a couple of months.
- The kitchenette breaker trips when the induction hot plate and microwave run together. Series 1 and early Series 2 panels came with a 20-amp shared circuit. Abodu later revised the spec to a 30-amp dedicated line. That overload condition is the single most common conversion failure we see in older Los Angeles installs.
- The mini-split cycles on and off every few minutes. It’s not the unit itself. The conversion kit uses a stepped condenser bracket that transmits vibration into the wall framing. Over time the flare fitting at the line set loosens, refrigerant leaks, and the system short-cycles.
- Door hinges sag or the cabinet faces won’t sit flush. The junior conversion modules are anchored to the unit walls with a bracket system that settles differently between the Series 2 and Series 3 frames. A 2-millimeter shift at the anchor throws everything out of square.
- You hear water hammer when the cassette faucet shuts off. The conversion plumbing uses a short rigid drop without a hammer arrestor on early units. Los Angeles water pressure runs high, and the shock eventually fractures the plastic push-connect fitting inside the wall cavity.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles Abodu junior units, here’s what we put in writing before any work starts:
- Bathroom cassette replacement: $2,200 to $3,900 installed, depending on series and whether the pan needs retrofitting.
- Kitchenette module (hot plate, sink, cabinetry): $1,850 to $3,200 installed.
- Electrical subpanel retorque and breaker upgrade (30-amp revision): $650 to $1,100, including permit.
- Mini-split line set reflare and refrigerant recharge: $450 to $800, assuming no compressor damage.
- Full junior conversion refresh (all of the above): $4,600 to $6,900, trimmed for series and site conditions.
What drives the range: which series you have, whether the original anchor brackets are intact, and whether you’re in a shear-wall zone that requires additional strapping detail. We write one number before we start and that’s the number on the final invoice. The Garrison Standard covers the workmanship for 365 days. If something fails inside that year, we come back and correct it at no charge.

Some of this you can safely check yourself. If the breaker keeps tripping, you can look at the panel label to see if it’s the shared 20-amp circuit. If the cabinet doors are sagging, you can see the gap at the hinge line with your own eyes. That level of diagnosis is useful and we’ll walk you through it on the phone if you want.
But here’s where it goes wrong: the bathroom cassette plumbing, the mini-split line set, and the breaker panel are not homeowner-friendly jobs. The electrical work requires a Los Angeles city permit and a licensed electrician. The refrigerant work requires EPA Section 608 certification. The plumbing inside the wall cavity means cutting into the unit’s moisture barrier, and doing that wrong creates mold you won’t see for a year. A real risk, not a scare tactic. FAQs

Most original conversion components hold up for five to seven years in Los Angeles conditions before something fails. The bathroom cassette drain grommet and the shared-circuit electrical panel on older series are usually the first to go. With the proper 30-amp revision and a quality aftermarket cassette, you can expect another seven years.
Sometimes. A mini-split line set can be reflared and recharged if the compressor hasn’t burned out. A kitchenette cabinet face can be realigned if the anchor brackets are still holding. But if the bathroom cassette pan has corroded through or the subpanel shows heat scoring, replacement is cheaper than patching. Call (213) 732-1415 and we’ll tell you which side of that line your unit falls on.
A kitchenette module swap takes one full day. A bathroom cassette replacement runs one and a half to two days. A full junior conversion refresh with the electrical revision takes three working days. We schedule the city inspection as part of the job, not after the job.
We carry the common Series 1 through Series 3 conversion components on the truck: bathroom cassettes, kitchenette modules, breaker panel revision kits, mini-split brackets, and the anchor hardware. We also stock compatible parts for Cover and Dvele units. If it’s exotic, we order it and have it inside three business days.
